What Is Trigger Point Dry Needling?

why-clean.webp

Trigger point dry needling is a technique performed by a licensed physical therapist who is specifically trained and certified in dry needling. It is used to release trigger points in muscle tissue. Trigger points are areas where a muscle has formed a palpable, uncomfortable knot because of an injury, overuse, or less than optimal movement patterns. These knots need to be addressed in order to improve function, but oftentimes standard stretching and foam rolling do not provide a sufficient or sustainable release. Dry needling can be the reset the muscle needs.

Dry needling eliminates trigger points through the elicitation of a twitch response, allowing the muscle to reach a new length. Dry needling also relieves pain and improves muscle performance by creating a change in the neuromuscular system.

Trigger point dry needling can be used to treat nearly any muscle in the body and several different common concerns, including, but not limited to, postural tension/discomfort, neck/back pain, certain types of headaches, muscle strains, persistent muscular or neuromuscular tightness, and general mobility limitations.

For example, a runner with knee pain would likely benefit from treatment of the quads or hips, a person who works at a desk all day may benefit from treatment of the upper or lower back, and a mother nursing or caring for her children would likely find relief after treatment of her shoulders or back.

While the needles used are similar to those used in acupuncture, dry needling is not the same as acupuncture.

What to Expect

Mobility Evaluation

First Step

New clients will establish care and design a treatment plan with the physical therapist during an initial evaluation. We will discuss client history, lifestyle, and goals. We will assess soft tissue mobility and movement patterns. With client consent, an initial dry needling treatment will be performed during this visit.

Trigger Point Dry Needling

Performed Every Session

After determining a client's needs, trigger point dry needling is used to release the appropriate muscles. Session frequency is client-specific, but needling is typically very effective if performed weekly/biweekly for 4-8 weeks, with possible subsequent maintenance sessions.

Personalized Exercise Plan

Updated Regularly

Mobility gains achieved through the use of dry needling are best maintained when clients perform targeted exercises on a regular basis. Exercises are prescribed after the initial treatment and are updated each session. A final exercise program, if performed regularly, allows clients to maintain mobility gains well after treatments are completed.

Meet the Therapist

I believe in treating muscle imbalances, mobility concerns, or daily discomfort before it turns into a true injury. We all lead busy lives, and we all need to spend a little more time on self care.

I completed my Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Northwestern University. Throughout my time treating clients in an outpatient setting, I have taken extensive continuing education coursework in trigger point dry needling and other manual techniques. I currently see clients exclusively one on one in order to provide care that is centered on client needs, concerns, and overall wellbeing.

"I have been dealing with chronic back pain for the last 10 years, and nothing gives me relief as quickly or as significantly as dry needling with Jess. Her technique is so delicate, precise and effective. Of all the modalities I have tried (yoga, regular massages, prescription medications, chiropractors and other physical therapists), Jess’s needling/expertise has been, by far, the single most helpful tool in my tool box. I have referred multiple friends to her who have experienced the same positive results. I cannot say enough good things about Jess and the game changer that dry needling can be for chronic pain!

Liliana M.

"I started working with Jessica in 2018 to address a back injury that had me in excruciating pain. While I am terrified of needles, I decided to give dry-needling a try and immediately became a believer, as I saw the benefits of it almost instantaneously. Jessica’s technique and knowledge are at the top of her field. Jessica takes the time to understand your injury and goals and creates a plan that progressively helps you regain mobility and strength.  Even after my back pain went away, I continued working with Jessica and have since completed five marathons without exacerbating my existing back injury. I am in the best shape of my life thanks to Jessica’s treatment and strengthening plan and recommend her to those seeking to optimize their health, avoid injury, and address existing issues."

"Jessica’s dry needling brought tremendous relief from my migraine headaches. For me, dry needling has been a valuable complement to my neurologist’s treatment plan. Fewer drugs and more good days. I’d highly recommend giving it a try."
